Britain Would Be Better Off WIth 80% Of Its Traffic Lights Taken Down

A recent report by a leading think tank, the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) states that the increase in traffic lights, speed bumps and bus lanes in Britain is “detrimental to road safety, the economy and the environment, it also imposes huge costs on road users, taxpayers and communities.”

The report states that from 2000 to 2014, despite there being little increase in relation to the volume of traffic, the number of traffic lights in the UK rose by 25%.

It goes on to state that the high proportion of traffic regulation imposes an enormous burden on the UK economy.  It estimates that a mere 2 minute delay for each car trip would end up costing the economy 16 billion pounds a year.

The report states that on top of the cost of delays, traffic lights have a detrimental effect on the environment as they encourage frequent braking and acceleration and this increases fuel consumption and emissions.

Also the report states that traffic lights go against the fundamental principle of road safety in that they encourage us to ignore our surroundings and to focus on the traffic lights ahead.

The report argues that a high proportion of traffic lights should be replaced by “shared space” schemes that encourage voluntary co-operation among road users.

Looking at case studies from all around the UK, and also using evidence from successful schemes in Holland and Germany, the report estimates that 80% of traffic lights could be removed in the UK while having a positive effect on the economy and road safety.

For the moment, though, motorists should be very careful.  To contravene traffic lights can result in 3 penalty points being imposed on your driving licence.  If this brings your total to 12 penalty points or more then the court has to disqualify you for at least 6 months unless exceptional hardship is successfully argued.
